Naples’ Mediterra to host first ever USTA-sanctioned one-day Tiebreak Tournament

NAPLES, Fla. (Aug. 1, 2014) – The Club at Mediterra will host a new type of tennis tournament, the one-day Tiebreak, Saturday, Aug. 9. Instead of best of three sets, each match will be best of three 10-point “match tiebreaks”

For example, a score might be 10-6, 8-10, 10-6. That’s a total of 50 points, which is comparable to playing a set with a score of six games to three.

Mediterra’s Director of Tennis, Michael Baldwin, a member of a USTA Adult Competition Special Project Team tasked with creating competitive events that are more practical and accommodate today’s busy lifestyles, believes the one-day tournament event does exactly that.

“Many adults find it challenging to devote an entire weekend to play a tournament,” said Baldwin. “We didn’t want tennis players to lose out on the thrill of competition, the challenge and fun of playing new people and the opportunity to earn a ranking due to time constraints or hotel and travel costs associated. So, our committee came up with innovative formats that are compact tournaments played in about four to five hours rather than an entire weekend. The players are also eligible for ranking points.”

Players will be divided by level (3.0 - 5.0 NTRP) and age (under 45/over 45). The goal will be for everyone to play three matches and guaranteed a minimum of two matches.

Registration is $28 per player and includes lunch.

Recent renovations expanded The Club at Mediterra’s terrace and added a fire pit to the popular Tavern lounge, which serves gourmet brick-oven pizzas, seasonal salads and open-air grilled entrées.
